Rooted in Hopkins

Our Community & Environmental Initiatives

At Coconut Row Boutique Hotel, our hearts are rooted in Hopkins—its people, its culture, and the beautiful environment that surrounds us. We believe that caring for this village means nurturing both its community and its natural spaces, ensuring that everything we love about Hopkins continues to flourish. Our home in Hopkins, Belize, inspires us every day to give back in ways that make a lasting difference.

Our community programs are born from that gratitude. Through our Cleaning for Tuition program and other local initiatives, we support children, uplift families, and help keep our village beautiful—so Hopkins continues to thrive for generations to come.

Cleaning for Tuition: Teaching Pride in a Clean Environment

A group of children and adults walk down a gravel road lined with greenery and buildings under a blue sky.

Our signature program, Cleaning for Tuition, is especially close to our hearts. From the beginning, the vision was simple: to help children access education while also teaching them to care deeply for their environment. We want young people to understand not only the value of hard work, but also the pride that comes from protecting the place they call home.

Now, each year, children from Hopkins, Silk Grass, Sittee River, and Maya Center come together to clean their own villages—picking up litter from streets, beaches, and yards, laughing with friends, and discovering that there is dignity in caring for the land beneath their feet.

In return, we pay their annual primary school tuition, ensuring that every participant earns their way to education while learning the value of responsibility, teamwork, and environmental pride.

  • Tuition cost: about US $30 per student per year

  • 2025 impact: 445 students sponsored across four villages

  • Why it matters: While $30 USD may seem small, many families in our nearby villages struggle to afford this amount each year. For some children and families, this program is vital.

Lesson learned: Work has value, and caring for your community is something to be proud of.

Keeping Hopkins Beautiful

A group of children and adults clean up debris along a sandy beach lined with palm trees.

For many years, we’ve been using our staff and neighborhood children to clean up the Hopkins Road and the main road through the village. We also routinely hired part-time workers to continue the work.

Since 2023, we’ve also been proud to sponsor two full-time Village Cleaners on behalf of the Hopkins Village Council, and their daily work keeps Hopkins looking as warm and welcoming as the people who live here.

From maintaining public areas to removing waste after community events, their work helps ensure that Hopkins remains one of Belize’s most welcoming and pristine seaside villages.

We’re excited to continue supporting the people who help make Hopkins shine.

High School Scholarship Program: Opening Doors for the Future

Four children in colorful outfits stand together in front of a straw-roofed building.

We are honored to continue supporting promising young people through our High School and College Scholarship Program, created for students who cannot otherwise afford to attend high school. This scholarship is more than financial aid—it is an investment in character, community leadership, and personal growth.

To be eligible, students must demonstrate kindness, motivation, and a commitment to their village. Once selected, scholarship recipients agree to:

  • Maintain a minimum grade of 85 or above in every subject

  • Contribute at least 10 hours per month to community projects designated by Coconut Row Boutique Hotel

  • Serve as positive role models within their community

Each year, students are reviewed to determine continued eligibility based on academic performance, conduct, and community involvement. As of 2025, we’ve assisted six students with either single-year or multi-year scholarships.

The cost of tuition at Ecumenical High School in Dangriga is approximately USD $400 per year—a significant expense for many families. The cost of college at University of Belize is even more - about USD $1,750 per year.Through this program, we hope to open doors that would otherwise remain closed.

Supporting Youth and Local Programs

We’re also deeply committed to supporting the young people of our community—whether they’re learning in the classroom, cleaning their village, rising to the challenge of a scholarship, or chasing a football across the field at sunset.

Coconut Row Boutique Hotel proudly sponsors the Hopkins Children’s Football Team and contributes to other local initiatives that encourage learning, fitness, and leadership. Whether on the field, in the classroom, or along our beaches, we believe every child deserves a chance to grow strong and confident.
